Disputing Casino Charges – Is It Possible & How To Do It?

Learn when disputing casino charges is appropriate, how to dispute gambling charges, and why you shouldn't even try to cheat the banking system.

Gamble Verdict desk·

Disputing casino charges is something many of us have considered at some point. It can happen because of regret, or because you have been defrauded.

Disputing Casino Charges – Is It Possible & How To Do It?

In this article, we look at why you can dispute a casino charge, how you would go about it, what legitimate reasons there are for trying - and what consequences you might face for doing so.

Can You Dispute Casino Charges

Yes, you can dispute gambling charges - both online and brick-and-mortar - but you are unlikely to succeed. Even if you do succeed, there are significant downsides to be aware of.

Let's take a look at the facts about online casino chargebacks.

Online casinos are service providers. You give them money in exchange for them providing a service. And that service is simply the opportunity to play games of chance on their website (or at their premises). There is the possibility of winning more than you spend, but that is not guaranteed.

A consumer can dispute any charges for goods or services they incur. In the past, consumers had to sue in court for breach of contract, but nowadays most countries have consumer rights laws that give consumers extra powers and avenues for dealing with businesses they are dissatisfied with.

The most common way to dispute online casino charges is via a chargeback.

A chargeback is like asking for a refund, except instead of asking the business to give your money back, you ask the bank to take it back on your behalf.

Each country has a set of specific rules pertaining to how chargebacks are processed, accepted, and declined. How easy a casino chargeback is to make depends on what country you are in. The US makes it very easy for consumers to carry out online gambling chargebacks. In the EU, it's slightly more difficult but still possible.

Normally the bank will allow the business to contest any chargeback request. Contesting a chargeback generally involves additional costs for the business, including bank fees and administrative costs. Some businesses find it easier and cheaper to simply accept chargebacks under a certain value, and then blacklist that customer so they can't do it again.

Dishonest chargeback requests are known as "Friendly Fraud", but pardon the misnomer, they are still fraud. There are potentially significant consequences even if the chargeback request is accepted, and at worst the consumer can find themselves facing criminal charges.

How to Reverse Casino Charges

How you can reverse a casino charge will depend on how you incurred the charge in the first place. If you have paid the casino in cash (or cryptocurrency), then the only way you can dispute the charges is to go to court. It will be very time-consuming, expensive, and difficult.

If you used a bank card or an electronic transfer, then you can request a chargeback from your bank. However, you cannot just request a chargeback because you regret losing the money. You need to show that the goods or services breached your consumer rights in some non-trivial way, or that you did not authorize the payment at all.

Casinos do not provide goods. They provide the service of allowing you to play their games of chance. This means you need to allege that either:

  • The casino did not provide the service promised - for example, you deposited but they did not allow you to play and kept your money
  • The service breached your consumer rights - for example, the casino promised fair games with a certain payout percentage, but in fact, the games were rigged in some way that meant the actual winning percentage was much lower
  • You did not order the service at all - for example, someone else used your card without your permission

The fact is, banks are very wary of chargeback requests about casinos, online or otherwise. This is because chargeback fraud and unjustified chargeback requests are extremely common. Some estimates suggest the majority of chargeback requests are not genuine. Sometimes, people just forget about a charge they made themselves and automatically contest it.

It is also extremely easy for the casino to dispute the claim. After all, all they need to do is show that you were given the opportunity to play their games of chance. Legitimate casinos will have certification from a third-party organization confirming their games are fair and as advertised.

Most casinos have ID requirements and this makes it much harder to allege it was not you that authorized the charges. Do you now understand why casinos make you send your ID when you signed up? It's to avoid fraud.

This means that the ball will be in your court. You will have to provide evidence that the casino breached your consumer rights. And sadly, the fact that you thought it was unfair that you lost your money is not going to cut it. You will need strong evidence and that is very difficult to get.

For example, you may be convinced that the online casino games were rigged, yet proving the allegation is another matter. You just don't have access to the kind of information you need to prove it. And the bank isn't going to get it for you.

The Right Time for Casino Chargebacks

Despite the inherent difficulties of a successful online casino chargeback, that doesn't mean there is no such thing as a legitimate casino chargeback. There are certain reasons where you are likely to succeed in disputing casino charges.

Charged Without Visiting any Casino

If you notice charges on your account for a casino you never visited - whether online or in person - then you should certainly consider a chargeback request. The casino should be able to show that they carried out some sort of diligence that the deposit was legitimate.

Of course, if this has happened to you, then it's likely your bank or credit card has been stolen or cloned. You need to get it canceled ASAP.

Sent Money to a Scam Casino

Another mistake consumers can make is to deposit money with a fraudulent casino. These look like legitimate organizations but really they are set up to defraud anyone foolish enough to use their site.

Casinos are pretty much a license to print money and yet somehow that's not good enough for these crooks. They won't let you withdraw, their games are rigged, they rely on obscure small print to confiscate your wins, their customer service is non-existent and they make all kinds of marketing promises they don't keep.

And the worst-of-the-worst simply pretend to be legitimate sites and just take your money without even offering games in return! Most of these rogue casinos are based in obscure jurisdictions too - usually countries with very little regulation.

There are numerous lists online of "blacklisted" rogue casinos to avoid. If you're unlucky enough to deposit money on one of these sites then you are unlikely to get it back by any means other than via your bank.

Risks of Wrongful Casino Chargebacks

In the US in particular, it's very easy to succeed with an online casino chargeback. In many states it's illegal for online casinos to even take US citizens' money! Combine this with the fact nobody likes losing a big chunk of money with nothing to show for it, and that's a recipe for a lot of "Friendly Fraud".

Unjustified chargeback requests cost legitimate casinos a lot of money. Not just for the chargeback amounts themselves but the fees and administrative costs associated with each one. Even a failed request will cost the casino money to deal with.

As a result, casinos don't take kindly to Friendly Fraud. There is no getting around it: online casino chargebacks have consequences. And they can be severe.

If you make a chargeback against an online casino, you can expect to be banned from their casino and placed on an industry blacklist. You may find you can't make an account anywhere at all. That's if you're successful.

If you're unsuccessful, you'll go on the blacklist anyway and your bank may well close your account. You could be sued by your bank or the casino to recover costs.

And you could even face criminal charges. "Friendly Fraud" sounds pretty harmless, but don't be fooled. Fraud is a serious crime. Having that on your criminal record could seriously affect your life.

It's better to take your losses on the chin. Accept responsibility for the consequences of your own actions, instead of looking for ways to weasel out of it. Online casino gambling charges are always preferable to criminal charges, after all!

It is possible to dispute casino charges - but that doesn't mean you will succeed. And it definitely doesn't mean it's a good idea. Only consider it if you have been the victim of fraud. Otherwise, you will become a fraudster yourself.

I have screen footage of a casino game repeatedly taking the bet out of my account when i hit the spin button, the reels would start spinning, the first 2 or 3 reels would actually land- before the game froze and an error message popped up. When the game reloaded the cost of the spin was back in my account.

I dunno maybe that was fair, but in my mind as soon as i've paid and those reels are spinning then it's my game. And it was happening over and over again i was reloading a game for one minute for 5 seconds of playtime before it crashed again. It was really cramping my style and really ruined the who experience for me that day,

Anyway this casino is pretty legit so i knew they hadn't rigged the game to crash before a big win or something like that. But the error message said notify support so i did. And they just flat out denied over and over again that there was anything wrong at all. Despite all the video and screenshot etc. And that really annoyed me.

"Have you considered upgrading to faster internet? Call your broadband provider they will help you sort the issue."

So they ended up arguing email after email that it was all my fault. I was clearing cookies and caches and incognito to different browsers to different devices to different areas round the city. The issue was on my end they said.

Then it struck me- I was only watching the bloody thing. Nothing on my end controlled the spinning of the reels or the refund of the bet. Most if not all games these days have a "replay"" function just to show what happened with the bet while I was disconnected.

I asked to be refunded/credited my deposit for that day as my play experience was ruined then i spent hours of my time investigating it for them. And thye basically laughed in my face.

I was going to contest the charges then and i told them that too- at least i had significant proof. But i guess after all that i couldn't be bothered in the end i didn't want it to carry on and on over $50. I wish i had though

I ended up losing money in a fake casino which is now refusing to pay my winnings, bonus. The casino is trying to not only avoid paying winnings but also my money back that I deposited. Finally, I have been able to retrieve most of my lost funds of about $50,000, which I never believed I would get again.

Hi Michelle,. My name is Jennifer and I have been a victim of fraud as well. I've deposited quite a bit of money with Pink Flamingo and finally all my efforts paid off. I hit several small jackpots which ended up being almost $600. Pink Flamingo refuses to pay me, altered the records trying to show I lost all my money playing it back. Now I can't even correspond with them as they've blocked me. I am beyond angry. How did you get your money back? What can I do?

  6. Frederike Terhaar

I honestly didn't believe the casino was a scam until they took all my money $14,000 and denied me access to withdrawal. I made an investment with the hope of making greater returns. I unhesitatingly had to hire a recovery expert/consultant to help me get my money back. He has successfully helped me recover, I reckon him to be the one to help out with cases.

  7. Jamie

  11. Sabba Mannan

I had a mental health breakdown a few months ago where I spent a lot of money, and another one recently. Is there anyway I can ask for a chargeback? I've only recently just come to after disassociating for months.

  12. Chase Austin

  13. Andrew Dinovitz

I was led to repeatedly and hung up on 129 times Via chat and phone instagram of having my ticket escalated. Never made one accusation but soon Emmy words were twisted while never once addressing the game play issue. I was booted with 15,000 worth invested and unaccounted for. I lost everything I had and there malicious treatmt cost me more than money, I shit down. They broke me.

anyone can charge back a online site and its easy. first of all the charges do not appear as a gambling charge they show up as some bs thing. when doing a chargeback just say you never got the product, example a computer. there is nothing they can do then period!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

they cheat and deserve it. for those of you saying oh you played and lost, its not about that. they rig the games so bad you cannot win. they set the house edge to a limit for everyone to lose

  15. Kass

How exactly ? I’ve been trying to get my money back from the online casino and I’m having to wait for an answer , I have a gambling issue which is why they closed my first account and I made another one without any issues and used the same information. The amounts I put are in different transactions would that still work via chargeback?

  16. Danny plett

Stay away from Playerz casino there casino ,always techs out, and deposits go missing !

  17. Jj

I’m confused here I got ripped off by an overseas online crypto currency casino site and you are saying “I could be charged with fraud”?!?! How is that?! When a supposed “reputable” online crypto currency casino site lets you create an account then deposit crypto THREE times on three different occasions then win and get denied winnings because I’m in the USA?! Um no sorry that’s beyond illegal on THEIR part. Only thing I’m guilty of being is a sucker!

  18. John

For those of you that have been scammed one way to get your money back is tell the bank you never made these purchases to begin with. Then it’s on the burden of the casino to prove it is legitimate. And if it’s an illegal offshore gambling website they cannot provide proof since they ran the transaction as fake goods, and you’ll win your dispute. It’s a simple and good way to get your money back. I have done it before with betonline, bovada, etc

  19. Wendy M

Can you please help me. Our bank is saying that they have proof that the charges were not fraud they are legitimate. And will not return the money. Hiw do I fight that? Please and thanks.

  20. John

Stay away from sweepstakes casinos online there games are fixed and rigged.theres a reason why there making tons of money of players looking for a fair game to play good luck stay offline

  21. Leah

These games are legitimately rigged & I also have a gambling issue although, I know my rights as a player on many platforms. Pulsz for one, I hit three jackpots. Than they say well we have to verify everything so I submitted all of my paperwork including an affidavit. 3 weeks, still nothing in progress to be sent to my bank account. Mind you, 3 weeks is a long time for someone who plays daily to wait and not just cancel their winnings but I waited! Then, I get an email stating you are selected to be a part of our sweepstakes back special. Okay so I was like well I get my sweeps back even If I play some. Well they were processing $12,000 of the $90,000 I won, next three days, I still haven’t received a thing. They then, tell me oh somehow we were unable to process your winnings into your bank account due to an error. Additionally, they had already returned the 12,000 sweeps back to my account balance with no information on how it got there in the midst of me playing for my “sweepstakes back” and 3 hours later they email me to tell me they returned the $12,000 sweeps back to my balance. Okay so I was infuriated at this point. Not only because they continuously said after weeks, you are good to go we have verified your documents etc, but now they can’t even put my winnings inside of my account?! Next thing the date of my “sweepsback” promotion came and went without me getting any of what they had sent me in am email advertising to me that I would be able to get more the more I spent. Pretty funny how they know I have spent thousands of dollars on here & how weeks go by & I get that email, no money in my account & spend it all just to get nothing back as they stated. I’m sorry but I know they are kidding. Like it’s a legit joke. Probably why they didn’t want to give me so much was because the day I had won $90,000 I only spent $5. Believe it or not that was it. Now I have disputed all charges from them in the bank account that they have claimed is not letting them deposit because thats the only fair way. It’s not like I haven’t spent thousands with them on other banks and have never asked for a dispute on those accounts. Its just not fair to be able to charge me and not be able to pay me when I win especially that big.

Most of these articles are written by the casino or paid by the casino to write it. Online casino use third-party to process your cc because they know they can't operate in the US. Dont let these online casino scary u. Call your bank request a charge back if they ask u what the charge for things I order but never got. Your bank will send a request to the fake Marchant that process your cc. They won't respond to your bank and and refund the charge
